God's Words of Comfort

A Portion of God's Holy Word Regarding:

Wisdom – Guidance – Discernment – Help – Understanding

In the heart of all who are wise-hearted I have put wisdom. Exodus 31:6 (WEB)

[The Ten Commandments:]
I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before Me.
You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in Heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love Me and keep My commandments.
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.
Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
     You shall not murder.
And you shall not commit adultery.
     And you shall not steal.
And you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
And you shall not covet your neighbor's wife. And you shall not desire your neighbor's house, his field, or his male servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.  Deuteronomy 5:7-21 (ESV)

Lupines"Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God: Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the country. Blessed shall be the fruit of your body, the produce of your ground and the increase of your herds, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks. Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out." Deuteronomy 28:1-6 (WEB)

[When King David died his son, Solomon, replaced him as king over Israel. God appeared to him in a dream and asked what he wanted. Instead of asking for great wealth, long life and victory over his enemies, Solomon asked for wisdom. See 1 Kings 3:1-15:]
Solomon said, "Give Your servant, then, a wise heart for judging Your people, able to see what is good and what is evil; for who is able to be the judge of this great people?"
Now these words and Solomon's request were pleasing to the Lord… "I have done as you said: I have given you a wise and far-seeing heart, so that there has never been your equal in the past, and never will there be any like you in the future." 1 Kings 3:9-10, 12 (BBE)

"If My people, who are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from Heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. Now My eyes shall be open, and My ears attentive, to the prayer that is made in this place." 2 Chronicles 7:14-15 (WEB)

Proverbs 2:1-5 (NRSV)

Snowy Sierras from Owens ValleyHappy is the person who finds wisdom, the one who gets understanding. Wisdom is worth more than silver; it brings more profit than gold. Wisdom is more precious than rubies; nothing you could want is equal to it. With her right hand wisdom offers you a long life, and with her left hand she gives you riches and honor. Wisdom will make your life pleasant and will bring you peace. As a tree produces fruit, wisdom gives life to those who use it, and everyone who uses it will be happy. The Lord made the earth, using His wisdom. He set the sky in place, using His understanding. Proverbs 3:13-19 (NCV™)

Get wisdom and understanding. Don't forget or ignore my words. Hold on to wisdom, and it will take care of you. Love it, and it will keep you safe. Wisdom is the most important thing; so get wisdom. If it costs everything you have, get understanding. Treasure wisdom, and it will make you great; hold on to it, and it will bring you honor. It will be like flowers in your hair and like a beautiful crown on your head. My child, listen and accept what I say. Then you will have a long life. I am guiding you in the way of wisdom, and I am leading you on the right path. Proverbs 4:5-11 (NCV™)

For sound advice is a beacon, good teaching is a light, moral discipline is a life path. Proverbs 6:20-23 (The Message)

A wise, mature person is known for his understanding. The more pleasant his words, the more persuasive he is. Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me. Micah 7:8 (KJV)

"Every one who hears these My teachings and acts upon them will be found to resemble a wise man who builds his house upon rock; and the heavy rain falls, the swollen torrents come, and the winds blow and beat against the house; yet it does not fall, for its foundation is on rock. And every one who hears these My teachings and does not act upon them will be found to resemble a fool who builds his house upon sand. The heavy rain descends, the swollen torrents come, and the winds blow and burst upon the house, and it falls; and disastrous is the fall." Matthew 7:24-27 (WNT)

"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." Matthew 11:28-30 (NKJV)

[Jesus used word-pictures, or parables, to give insight into a truth or lesson, about God and His Kingdom. One pastor I read described parables as ‘putting a heavenly truth into an earthly context.’ People of all walks of life came to hear Jesus, and these parables were used to challenge and open the minds of His listeners. Jesus taught a diverse audience, and the subjects of these parables were people and things from everyday life that appealed and related to His audience, such as farmers, shepherds, the rich and the poor, weeds, a tiny mustard seed, a lost coin or sheep, yeast, a barren fig tree, and so on. Jesus knew that not everyone would understand the parables. They have deeper meanings about God that will be shown to us if we approach them with an open mind and heart, allowing God’s Word and Spirit to work and grow within us. The religious leaders of the day were often angered over these parables because they did get the point, because it usually criticized them.]
"Let the person who has ears listen!"
The disciples asked Him, "Why do You use stories as illustrations when You speak to people?"
Jesus answered, "Knowledge about the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven has been given to you. But it has not been given to the crowd."
"Those who understand these mysteries will be given more knowledge, and they will excel in understanding them. However, some people don't understand these mysteries. Even what they understand will be taken away from them. This is why I speak to them this way. They see, but they're blind. They hear, but they don't listen. They don't even try to understand. So they make Isaiah's prophecy come true: 'You will hear clearly but never understand. You will see clearly but never comprehend. These people have become close-minded and hard of hearing. They have shut their eyes so that their eyes never see. Their ears never hear. Their minds never understand. And they never return to Me for healing!'
"Blessed are your eyes because they see and your ears because they hear."
Matthew 13:9-16 (GOD’S WORD®)

"So I say to you, 'Ask, and what you ask for shall be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and the door shall be opened to you.' For every one who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, the door shall be opened. And what father is there among you, who, if his son asks for a slice of bread, will offer him a stone? or if he asks for a fish, will instead of a fish offer him a snake? or if he asks for an egg, will offer him a scorpion? If you then, with all your human frailty, know how to give your children gifts that are good for them, how much more certainly will your Father who is in Heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!" Luke 11:9-13 (WNT)

Sierra ViewFor the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. Luke 19:10 (KJV)

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." John 14:6 (NRSV)

"I will ask the Father and He will give you another Comforter, and He will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, the Spirit who leads into all truth. The world at large cannot receive Him, for it isn't looking for Him and doesn't recognize Him. But you do, for He lives with you now and some day shall be in you." John 14:16-17 (TLB)

"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." John 14:26 (KJV)

"However, I am telling you the truth: It's good for you that I'm going away. If I don't go away, the Helper won't come to you. But if I go, I will send Him to you… When the Spirit of Truth comes, He will guide you into the full truth. He won't speak on His own. He will speak what He hears and will tell you about things to come." John 16:7, 13 (GOD’S WORD®)

The Spirit helps us with our weakness. We do not know how to pray as we should. But the Spirit Himself speaks to God for us, even begs God for us with deep feelings that words cannot explain. God can see what is in people's hearts. And He knows what is in the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit speaks to God for His people in the way God wants. Romans 8:26-27 (NCV™)

[You are encouraged to read Romans chapter 12, which is a good summation of what a new life in Christ will do for you, as it describes how a true Christian should conduct oneself. Numerous points are included here:]
I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God…
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God…
[Do not] think of yourself more highly than you ought to think…
We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us…
Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor…
Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer…
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them…
Live in harmony with one another…
Do not repay anyone evil for evil…
Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God…
     Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:2, 3, 6, 9-10, 12, 14, 16, 17, 19 (NRSV)

The teaching about the cross is foolishness to those who are being lost, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. It is written in the Scriptures: "I will cause the wise men to lose their wisdom; I will make the wise men unable to understand"… The Jews ask for miracles, and the Greeks want wisdom. But we preach a crucified Christ. This is a big problem to the Jews, and it is foolishness to those who are not Jews. But Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God to those people God has called -- Jews and Greeks. Even the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. 1 Corinthians 1:18-19, 22-25 (NCV™)

Yet, when I am among mature Christians I do speak with words of great wisdom, but not the kind that comes from here on earth, and not the kind that appeals to the great men of this world, who are doomed to fall. Our words are wise because they are from God, telling of God's wise plan to bring us into the glories of Heaven. This plan was hidden in former times, though it was made for our benefit before the world began. But the great men of the world have not understood it; if they had, they never would have crucified the Lord of Glory. 1 Corinthians 2:6-8 (TLB)

Now, we didn't receive the spirit that belongs to the world. Instead, we received the Spirit who comes from God so that we could know the things which God has freely given us. We don't speak about these things using teachings that are based on intellectual arguments like people do. Instead, we use the Spirit's teachings. We explain spiritual things to those who have the Spirit. A person who isn't spiritual doesn't accept the teachings of God's Spirit. He thinks they're nonsense. He can't understand them because a person must be spiritual to evaluate them. 1 Corinthians 2:12-14 (GOD’S WORD®)

New Zealand MountainsYou should not fool yourself. If any of you think that you are wise by this world's standards, you should become a fool, in order to be really wise. For what this world considers to be wisdom is nonsense in God's sight. As the Scripture says, "God traps the wise in their cleverness"; and another Scripture says, "The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are worthless." 1 Corinthians 3:18-20 (GNT)

If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don't love, I'm nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate. If I speak God's Word with power, revealing all His mysteries and making everything plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a mountain, "Jump," and it jumps, but I don't love, I'm nothing. If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don't love, I've gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I'm bankrupt without love. 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 (The Message)

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Galatians 5:16 (KJV)

Our sinful selves want what is against the Spirit, and the Spirit wants what is against our sinful selves. The two are against each other, so you cannot do just what you please. But if the Spirit is leading you, you are not under [Moses’] law.
The wrong things the sinful self does are clear: being sexually unfaithful, not being pure, taking part in sexual sins, worshiping gods, doing witchcraft, hating, making trouble, being jealous, being angry, being selfish, making people angry with each other, causing divisions among people, feeling envy, being drunk, having wild and wasteful parties, and doing other things like these. I warn you now as I warned you before: Those who do these things will not inherit God's kingdom.
But the Spirit produces the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. There is no law that says these things are wrong. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their own sinful selves. They have given up their old selfish feelings and the evil things they wanted to do. We get our new life from the Spirit, so we should follow the Spirit. Galatians 5:17-25 (NCV™)

I do more than thank. I ask - ask the God of our Master, Jesus Christ, the God of glory - to make you intelligent and discerning in knowing Him personally, your eyes focused and clear, so that you can see exactly what it is He is calling you to do, grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life He has for Christians, oh, the utter extravagance of His work in us who trust Him - endless energy, boundless strength! All this energy issues from Christ: God raised Him from death and set Him on a throne in deep Heaven, in charge of running the universe, everything from galaxies to governments, no name and no power exempt from His rule. And not just for the time being, but forever. Ephesians 1:17-21 (The Message)

My God will use His wonderful riches in Christ Jesus to give you everything you need. Philippians 4:19 (NCV™)

God has chosen you and made you His holy people. He loves you. So always do these things: Show mercy to others, be kind, humble, gentle, and patient. Get along with each other, and forgive each other. If someone does wrong to you, forgive that person because the Lord forgave you. Do all these things; but most important, love each other. Love is what holds you all together in perfect unity. Let the peace that Christ gives control your thinking, because you were all called together in one body to have peace. Always be thankful. Colossians 3:12-15 (NCV™)

Aspen Leaves in SnowLet the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to God. Colossians 3:16 (WEB)

Give thought to what I say; for the Lord will give you wisdom in all things. 2 Timothy 2:7 (BBE)

All Scripture is given by God and is useful for teaching, for showing people what is wrong in their lives, for correcting faults, and for teaching how to live right. 2 Timothy 3:16 (NCV™)

If you need wisdom – if you want to know what God wants you to do – ask Him, and He will gladly tell you. He will not resent your asking. But when you ask Him, be sure that you really expect Him to answer, for a doubtful mind is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. People like that should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. James 1:5-7 (NLT)

Are there any of you who are wise and understanding? You are to prove it by your good life, by your good deeds performed with humility and wisdom. James 3:13 (GNT)

The wisdom that comes from God is first of all pure, then peaceful, gentle, and easy to please. This wisdom is always ready to help those who are troubled and to do good for others. It is always fair and honest. People who work for peace in a peaceful way plant a good crop of right-living. James 3:17-18 (NCV™)

Now finally, all of you should be like-minded and sympathetic, should love believers, and be compassionate and humble, not paying back evil for evil or insult for insult but, on the contrary, giving a blessing, since you were called for this, so that you can inherit a blessing. For the one who wants to love life and to see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit, and he must turn away from evil and do good. He must seek peace and pursue it. 1 Peter 3:8-11 (HCSB)

And God has given us His Spirit as proof that we live in Him and He in us. 1 John 4:13 (NLT)

We know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we know the real God. We are in the One who is real, His Son Jesus Christ. This Jesus Christ is the real God and eternal life. 1 John 5:20 (NCV™)
