God's Words of Comfort

Go forth and TeachOur Idea

Searching for Answers

The idea for this website was planted while reading the Bible several years ago, searching for some particular verses that I needed on patience. Needing more patience in my life, I wanted to commit some verses to memory, enabling me to recall them whenever the need arose (or at least have as a handy reference), whether dealing with others, sitting in traffic, or waiting for God's answers to prayer. Shortly thereafter, I got the idea to take note of Bible verses dealing with other problems and situations in life (which eventually grew to a total of 40 different categories in all), and make it available as a website, providing world-wide access—Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost—Matthew 28:19 (KJV).

God's Answer Book — the Bible

The Bible is God's Word, His answer book, for all of life's situations, questions and problems. This website is not trying to replace the Bible — our purpose here is to provide convenience and facilitate that search for many of God's answers. Often, people may be reluctant to turn to God for help or answers, or may not know where to begin to look. Additionally, on a global basis, there may be some people without access to a Christ-centered church or minister, Christian bookstore or any Christian media outlets like TV or radio. I am hoping that this site will become a starting point for those who seek God's biblical help and answers. It is also our hope that those of you who use and read our website will be encouraged and inspired to further explore the Bible for more of God's Holy Word, for—Blessed are they who hear the Word of God, and keep it—Luke 11:28 (KJV).

The Power To Transform Your Life

I have found that having God's Word with me wherever I go is reassuring and gives me more confidence to face my everyday situations. If you turn your life over to Christ, and allow Him to transform you into the person He wants you to be, you will undergo a 180 degree change—What this means is that those who become Christians become new persons. They are not the same anymore, for the old life is gone. A new life has begun—2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT). Anger is controlled; you feel more peace, joy and contentment with life and your immediate surroundings; reduced stress; more patience; better health; forgiveness of old hatreds, and so on.  If we as Christians are going to live life to the fullest, we need to fill ourselves with positive, reassuring and confidence-building thoughts each day, from God's Holy Word.

Help, Hope, and Answers for Anyone

This website is truly for anyone, from beginning believers to seasoned Christians, and to non-Christians alike, seeking help, answers and/or hope. We are all human with the same frustrations, frailties, difficulties and conflicts of life that everyone else faces. Being a Christian doesn't exempt you from problems, in fact, it sometimes seems you have even more of them. Each of us was designed by an all-knowing, all-loving God to discipline us and to make us strong. We don't get stronger by shying away from resistance, or running away from all of our problems. Life's problems give us a chance to exercise and increase our faith. God equips us to handle them, and He is with us every step of the way—I have said all these things to you so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble: but take heart! I have overcome the world—John 16:33 (BBE). And—Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword... No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us—Romans 8:35, 37 (NRSV).

Lost in the Bible?

The Bible is a very large, complex book and it's easy to see why many people would be intimidated trying to find answers to anything. It's also easy to get bogged down in the genealogies, descendants and all of the "begatting"… you know, "Abraham begat Issac, Issac begat Jacob, Jacob begat Judah and his brothers," etc. But we know that the books of the Bible (the Protestant Bible has 66 books or "chapters," the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Anglican Bibles have 73 books) were written by at least 40 different divinely inspired people. They ranged in walks of life from kings to fishermen, all within at least a 1,000-year span of time, approximately from 900 B.C. to 100 A.D. It is God's gift to humanity, to be used as a guide in our journey here on earth and into eternity, as well as leading us to a personal relationship with Him, the Creator of the universe—All Scripture is given by God and is useful for teaching, for showing people what is wrong in their lives, for correcting faults, and for teaching how to live right—2 Timothy 3:16 (NCV™). Even Scripture from the Bible itself tells us that it was written by God—First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God—2 Peter 1:20-21 (NRSV). God speaks to us about life's situations and how we should respond to themYour Word is a lamp to my feet, And a light for my path—Psalms 119:105 (WEB).

Picking the Verses

I limited each category to the most appropriate 130 (more or less) Bible verses I could find. The Bible verses in each category are arranged chronologically, beginning with Genesis in the Old Testament to Revelation in the New Testament. I used a variety of translations, from early versions such as the Authorized King James and Weymouth New Testament of Modern Speech, to more modern translations such as The Good News Bible, GOD’S WORD®, the New Revised Standard Version, and Eugene Peterson's The Message. I wanted to use a variety of translations in order to present the Word of God in newer, fresher ways, which might be more easily understood by readers lacking a religious or theological background, in addition to the more standard translations.

Some of the language used in the older translations, especially the King James Version, can be rather outdated, unfamiliar and not easily understood today, and if people are having difficulty understanding what the Bible is saying, they may get too discouraged and the purpose is defeated. With the variety of biblical translations used on this website, people who are unfamiliar with the Bible may hopefully see a version that is more clear, understandable and meaningful to them, and thus be compelled to obtain a copy of that translation of the Bible for further in-depth study. I realize that there are some out there who don't recognize any version of the Bible other than the Authorized King James. However, I think it's far more important to get God's Word out to people in translations that are more readable, appealing and understandable than to stand strictly on principle and not have people read the Word of the Lord simply because they don't comprehend it.

Spelling and Punctuation

I transferred each Bible verse word for word from the appropriate translation, although I did "Americanize" some of the spellings, for example, converting "Saviour" to "Savior," "honour" to "honor," and "defence" to "defense," and so forth. I also capitalized second- and third-person pronouns in the New Testament which refer to Jesus, as well as first-, second- and third-person pronouns throughout the entire Bible when the text referred to God—"him" to "Him," "thou" to "Thou," "mine" to "Mine," and so on. Some of these translations are within the Public Domain, and can be used freely, while others have copyright restrictions, allowing use of only a limited number of verses, and I've listed all versions used below. This list of Bible versions will also be presented at the end of each category. As stated earlier, this site is certainly not meant to replace the Bible, but to present a handy reference for beginning your search for answers to your problems or questions. The God of the universe has so much to say to us, and we fully encourage you to approach God's Holy Word in all honesty and with an open mind and heart.

Green-yellow woods and lakeMy Photos

I decided to add some of my photographs to not only break up the monotony of all the text, but to add some of the beauty of God's creation for you to hopefully enjoy. My intention was that you might view the photographs reminding yourself of some of the beautiful places throughout the world that you have visited, or hope to visit some day, and to take your mind off your problems and troubles if only for an instant. I wanted pleasant photos to provide an encouraging, uplifting point of focus for meditation and pondering of what God's will for you is—He is like a tree planted by streams of water, that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither—Psalms 1:3 (RSV).

Stained Glass Photos

I tried to place some of the stained glass photos adjacent to appropriate text. My hometown church, Carmel Presbyterian, Glenside, Pennsylvania, has more than a dozen beautiful, painted and stained glass windows in the Sanctuary. They were produced by Willet Studios of Philadelphia, and installed in 1945. Most of  these windows portray a facet of the life of Christ, depicting His ministries and teachings. Some of the themed windows include Christ's baptism, the Call of the Disciples, the Teaching Ministry and some of His Parables, the Lord's Supper, Christ Blessing the Children, and more.

Comfort Cards OictureComfort Cards for Convenience

I also created a handy, pocket-sized "Comfort Card" format (see "Use Comfort Cards and Keep God's Word with You"), allowing you to take a selection of these verses with you wherever you go. Thousands of Bible verses were arranged into 40 categories for this website. From those, selected verses within each category were printed on a set of 16 cards front and back, neatly contained in a vinyl card holder. There is also a 16-card set offering Daily Inspiration, a 16-card Sample set, which takes select verses from some of the 40 individual categories, and a set of Comfort Cards specifically for children. Each card is approximately the size of a credit card, that fits into a double-sided holder, making it convenient having God's Holy Word with you at all times (a must-have for people on the go). We all face problems nearly every day, and having a Bible with you for inspiration and/or comfort may not always be feasible or convenient. But having a set or two of our "Comfort Cards" will facilitate the reading of God's Word, helping you through any difficult situation.

Consider turning everything over to God and letting Him fight your battles for you and comfort you in the sad times—Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit—Jeremiah 17:7-8 (ESV). AndTrust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding—Proverbs 3:5 (KJV).

This is how God has touched my life, this is what I'm doing with it. I truly hope that GodsWordsofComfort.com will prove to be as much of a blessing to you as it has been to me, and that you will find what you are looking for.

To God be all the glory forever and ever.
