A Portion of God's Holy Word Regarding:
Divorce – Estrangement – Loyalty – Remarriage
When a man makes a vow to the Lord, or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth. Numbers 30:2 (NRSV)
For the LORD thy God is a merciful God; He will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which He swore unto them. Deuteronomy 4:31 (KJV)
She answered, "Do not be against me, as if I would abandon you and go away; for wherever you will go, I will go, and where you will stay, I also will stay with you. Your people are my people, and your God is my God." Ruth 1:16 (CPDV)
Why do you go against the orders of the Lord, so that everything goes badly for you? Because you have given up the Lord, He has given you up. 2 Chronicles 24:20 (BBE)
The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. And those who know Your name put their trust in You, for You, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You. Psalms 9:9-10 (ESV)
Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart, All you who hope in the Lord. Psalms 31:24 (NKJV)
When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears, and rescues them from all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord rescues them from them all. Psalms 34:17-19 (NRSV)
I waited patiently for Yahweh. He turned to me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand. He has put a new song in my mouth, even praise to our God. Many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in Yahweh. Psalms 40:1-3 (WEB)
For this God is our God for ever and ever: He will be our guide even unto death. Psalms 48:14 (KJV)
"Call on Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me." Psalms 50:15 (NRSV)
Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me hear joy and gladness, That the bones You have broken may rejoice. Hide Your face from my sins, And blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And uphold me by Your generous Spirit. Psalms 51:6-12 (NKJV)
The sacrifice pleasing to God is a broken spirit. O God, You do not despise a broken and sorrowful heart. Psalms 51:17 (GOD’S WORD®)
Give your worries to the Lord, and He will take care of you. He will never let good people down. Psalms 55:22 (NCV™)
Hear my cry, God. Listen to my prayer. From the end of the earth, I will call to You, when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For You have been a refuge for me, A strong tower from the enemy. I will dwell in Your tent forever. I will take refuge in the shelter of Your wings. Psalms 61:1-4 (WEB)
Gladden the soul of Your servant, for to You, O Lord, I lift up my soul. For You, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call on You. Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer; listen to my cry of supplication. In the day of my trouble I call on You, for You will answer me. Psalms 86:4-7 (NRSV)
The Lord will not give up His people, or take away His support from His heritage. Psalms 94:14 (BBE)
I have gone astray like a lost sheep. Seek Your servant, for I don't forget Your commandments. Psalms 119:176 (WEB)
Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is desolate. I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Thy works; I muse on the work of Thy hands. I stretch forth my hands unto Thee: my soul thirsteth after Thee, as a thirsty land. Hear me speedily, O LORD: my spirit faileth: hide not Thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit. Cause me to hear Thy loving kindness in the morning; for in Thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto Thee. Psalms 143:4-8 (KJV)
The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth. He fulfills the desire of all who fear Him; He also hears their cry, and saves them. The Lord watches over all who love Him, but all the wicked He will destroy. Psalms 145:18-20 (NRSV)
Let your spring be blessed. Rejoice in the wife of your youth. Proverbs 5:18 (WEB)
A happy face means a glad heart; a sad face means a breaking heart… Better a little with reverence for God, than great treasure and trouble with it. Proverbs 15:13, 16 (TLB)
Better is a dry morsel with quietness, than a house full of feasting with strife. Proverbs 17:1 (WEB)
A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones. Proverbs 17:22 (KJV)
Whoever finds a wife finds a good thing, And obtains favor of the LORD. Proverbs 18:22 (HNV)
Lots of people claim to be loyal and loving, but where on earth can you find one? Proverbs 20:6 (The Message)
Do not give up your friend and your father's friend. Proverbs 27:10 (BBE)
"Don't be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will uphold you with My victorious right hand." Isaiah 41:10 (NLT)
The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail. Isaiah 58:11 (NRSV)
"I will comfort you there as a little one is comforted by its mother." Isaiah 66:13 (TLB)
This is another thing you do. You drown the Lord's altar with tears, weeping and wailing because He no longer accepts the offerings you bring Him. You ask why He no longer accepts them. It is because He knows you have broken your promise to the wife you married when you were young. She was your partner, and you have broken your promise to her, although you promised before God that you would be faithful to her. Didn't God make you one body and spirit with her? What was His purpose in this? It was that you should have children who are truly God's people. So make sure that none of you breaks his promise to his wife.
"I hate divorce," says the Lord God of Israel. "I hate it when one of you does such a cruel thing to his wife. Make sure that you do not break your promise to be faithful to your wife." Malachi 2:13-16 (GNT)
"It was also said, 'Whoever divorces his wife must give her a written notice of divorce.' But I tell you, everyone who divorces his wife, except in a case of sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery." Matthew 5:31-32 (HCSB)
"For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." Matthew 6:21 (KJV)
And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand." Matthew 12:25 (KJV)
"So they are no longer two, but one. No human being must separate, then, what God has joined together."
The Pharisees asked Him, "Why, then, did Moses give the Law for a man to hand his wife a divorce notice and send her away?"
Jesus answered, "Moses gave you permission to divorce your wives because you are so hard to teach. But it was not like that at the time of creation. I tell you, then, that any man who divorces his wife for any cause other than her unfaithfulness, commits adultery if he marries some other woman." Matthew 19:6-9 (GNT)
Some Pharisees came and asked Him, "Do you permit divorce?" Of course they were trying to trap Him.
"What did Moses say about divorce?" Jesus asked them.
"He said it was alright," they replied. "He said that all a man has to do is write her a letter of dismissal."
"And why did he say that?" Jesus asked. "I’ll tell you why—it was a concession to your hardhearted wickedness. But it certainly isn't God's way. For from the very first He made man and woman to be joined together permanently in marriage; therefore a man is to leave his father and mother, and he and his wife are united so that they are no longer two, but one. And no man may separate what God has joined together."
Later, when He was alone with His disciples in the house, they brought up the subject again.
He told them, "When a man divorces his wife to marry someone else, he commits adultery against her. And if a wife divorces her husband and remarries, she, too, commits adultery." Mark 10:2-12 (TLB)
"When ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in Heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in Heaven forgive your trespasses." Mark 11:25-26 (KJV)
"I will not leave you bereaved: I am coming to you." John 14:18 (WNT)
Don't you realize, brothers and sisters, that laws have power over people only as long as they are alive? (I'm speaking to people who are familiar with Moses' Teachings.) For example, a married woman is bound by law to her husband as long as he is alive. But if her husband dies, that marriage law is no longer in effect for her. So if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, she will be called an adulterer. But if her husband dies, she is free from this law, so she is not committing adultery if she marries another man. Romans 7:1-3 (GOD’S WORD®)
Don't just pretend that you love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Stand on the side of the good. Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. Never be lazy in your work, but serve the Lord enthusiastically. Be glad for all God is planning for you. Be patient in trouble, and always be prayerful. When God's children are in need, be the one to help them out. And get into the habit of inviting guests home for dinner or, if they need lodging, for the night. If people persecute you because you are a Christian, don't curse them; pray that God will bless them. Romans 12:9-14 (NLT)
God is faithful. 1 Corinthians 1:9 (KJV)
But, because of sexual immoralities, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband. Let the husband render to his wife the affection owed her, and likewise also the wife to her husband. The wife doesn't have authority over her own body, but the husband. Likewise also the husband doesn't have authority over his own body, but the wife. Don't deprive one another, unless it is by consent for a season, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer, and may be together again, that Satan doesn't tempt you because of your lack of self-control.1 Corinthians 7:2-5 (WEB)
To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is good for them to remain single as I am. But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion. 1 Corinthians 7:8-9 (ESV)
To the married I give charge, not I but the Lord, that the wife should not separate from her husband (but if she does, let her remain single or else be reconciled to her husband)--and that the husband should not divorce his wife.
To the rest I say, not the Lord, that if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he should not divorce her. If any woman has a husband who is an unbeliever, and he consents to live with her, she should not divorce him. For the unbelieving husband is consecrated through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is consecrated through her husband. Otherwise, your children would be unclean, but as it is they are holy.
But if the unbelieving partner desires to separate, let it be so; in such a case the brother or sister is not bound. For God has called us to peace. Wife, how do you know whether you will save your husband? Husband, how do you know whether you will save your wife? Only, let every one lead the life which the Lord has assigned to him, and in which God has called him. This is my rule in all the churches. 1 Corinthians 7:10-17 (RSV)
If you are married to a wife, make no attempt to get free from her. 1 Corinthians 7:27 (BBE)
Do not keep company with those who have not the Christian faith: for what is there in common between righteousness and evil, or between light and dark? And what agreement is there between Christ and the Evil One? or what part has one who has faith with one who has not? And what agreement has the house of God with images? for we are a house of the living God; even as God has said, "I will be living among them, and walking with them; and I will be their God, and they will be My people. For which cause, Come out from among them, and be separate," says the Lord, "and let no unclean thing come near you; and I will take you for Myself, And will be a Father to you; and you will be My sons and daughters," says the Lord, the Ruler of all. 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 (BBE)
Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord... Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly, and gave Himself up for it Ephesians 5:22, 25 (WEB)
My God--so great is His wealth of glory in Christ Jesus--will fully supply every need of yours. And to our God and Father be the glory throughout the Ages of the Ages! Amen. Philippians 4:19-20 (WNT)
Married men, be affectionate to your wives, and do not treat them harshly. Colossians 3:19 (WNT)
Faithful is He who calls you. 1 Thessalonians 5:24 (WNT)
That we may be made free from foolish and evil men; for not all have faith. But the Lord is true, who will give you strength and keep you safe from evil. 2 Thessalonians 3:2-3 (BBE)
God's solid foundation stands unmoved, bearing this inscription, "The Lord knows those who really belong to Him." 2 Timothy 2:19 (WNT)
Try to be at peace with everyone, and try to live a holy life, because no one will see the Lord without it. Guard against turning back from the grace of God. Let no one become like a bitter plant that grows up and causes many troubles with its poison. Hebrews 12:14-15 (GNT)
Be content with what you have; for God Himself has said, "I will never, never let go your hand: I will never, never forsake you." Hebrews 13:5 (WNT)
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. 1 Peter 5:6-7 (NKJV)
